grow tent with flowering cannabis. Grow lights. Thermometer hygrometer.

This article will prepare you to setup your new grow room! Regardless of garden size there are always a few considerations to be made, we will cover those here! I have setup a lot grow rooms that ranged in areas from basements and attics, spare rooms, conex containers and more!

There are always a few essentials I make sure to remember to have when setting up a new room. Ill go over a few of those items in this article.

Tip #1 - Become Mother Nature

When growing indoors you must recreate all of the elements of nature. Light, heat, humidity, the earth, wind and more are all things you must create and or control. Having all of the essential starting items for your room will naturally re-create all these elements. Keep reading to see what they all are.

Tip #2 - Have a sealed up room

Think "Light tight". The most important part when picking your space/room is making sure you can control how much light gets into your plants area. An enclosed room with no windows is ideal. Covering the windows, if there are any is crucial.

If you have a large space or just don't want to use a grow tent, Panda Film is a great option. Panda Film is a 5ml Black&White poly plastic. They come in 10'x25', 10'x50', and 10'x100' rolls. Black on one side and white on the other they are ideal for creating a room, blocking out light, reflecting light back off the walls and absorbing heat.

Tip #3 - 12-hours of darkness makes buds

Indoors, cannabis needs 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness to flower. This is done by setting lights on a timer to turn on and off in 12 hour intervals. Any light during the plants 12 hours of darkness can cause vegetative growths, males pods, and other unwanted "freak outs". The best way to handle this by using a grow tent or wrapping your room in plastic.

When your room is sealed up and light tight, before you put plants in there, its time to make sure. Grab a roll of Gorilla Tape, turn off the lights, seal up the room and stand in the darkness. Look for any light leaks and seal them.

Do it again right before you switch to 12/12!

Tip #4 - The right light

Your area and budget are going to be the biggest considerations when picking a light. Choose a light that is not too intense or too dim for your space, typically 300-600 watt lighting is used in areas roughly 4'x4', while 600-1000 watt lights are used in larger spaces.

HID lights are most commonly used and cheapest upfront cost. LED lighting has come a long ways and is as good or better than HID lighting. LEC is another option for low energy, low heat, low cost. Research all these types and find out what light is best for your space!

Remember that the more intense the light, the warmer it will be. So don't forget to...

Tip #5 - Control Your environment

Oscillating fans, dehumidifiers, AC/heating units are tools that are crucial from controlling your rooms climate. How many fans you need is based on room size with at least one. In a 10'x10' room I have 3-4 fans or one per wall.

Plants want to be 77 degrees and 55% humidity (basically, differently stages require slightly different ranges), they want gentle wind, and consistency.

A $20 thermometer hygrometer will tell you whether you need to heat or cool, dry or humidify your room and from there you can add different units for control.

Tip #6 - Consistency is key

When setting up and maintaining your grow room, consistency is key! Its important you have temperatures and humidity levels that are what the plants want and the same through the life cycle. While mother nature can throw all sorts of extreme weather at the plants, indoors you want to eliminate those problems to make the best buds possible!

There is always more to learn about growing cannabis!
